Supported Living That Puts You in Control
Supported living is a person-centred approach designed to help individuals with care needs live as independently as possible in their own home or rented accommodation.
By separating housing and personal care into different agreements, supported living gives people more choice and control over where they live, who they live with, and how their support is arranged.
What is Supported Living in the Community?
Supported living is a flexible model of care that enables individuals to live in their own homes or rented accommodation while receiving tailored support from a specialist provider such as Skyler Care.
Housing is usually arranged through local authorities, registered housing associations or private landlords, with rent and bills covered by the individual’s benefits or earnings. Care and support are then funded separately by the local council or, in some cases, the NHS.
At the heart of supported living are the principles of engagement, inclusion, empowerment and enablement. Our approach focuses on building skills, confidence and independence through lived experience.
How is Supported Living Different from Residential Care?
Both residential care and supported living provide accommodation and support, particularly for people with learning disabilities or autism. However, there are important differences:
- offers 24/7 support in a highly structured environment.
- promotes personalised support, gradual independence and full community integration.
In supported living, individuals hold their own tenancy and have far greater say over their routines, relationships and life choices.

What Is Not Included in Our Support Packages?
While we offer extensive support, some responsibilities sit with the individual, their landlord or other services. We’re always happy to explain this clearly and help with planning.
Housing & Living Costs
- Rent and utility bills (unless included in the tenancy agreement)
- Maintenance and repairs to the property
Personal Expenses
- Food and drinks
- Furniture and household items (unless in furnished accommodation)
- Personal belongings such as clothing, toiletries and entertainment
Activities, Transport & Equipment
- Funding for leisure activities, hobbies and days out
- Costs of public transport or taxis (we can help plan safe routes)
- Specialist equipment – we can support referrals and assessments, but equipment is usually funded via health or social care services
Supported living is about finding the right balance – offering enough help to promote autonomy, while ensuring safety, dignity and meaningful community participation.

A Person-Centred, Strengths-Based Approach
True support begins by recognising each person as the expert in their own life. Our role is to empower, not simply assist.
Co-Created, Person-Led Support
Our person-centred, strengths-based philosophy ensures that support is co-created with each individual. Wherever desired, we involve families, advocates and professionals – always respecting personal preferences and boundaries.
We focus on nurturing strengths, building skills and supporting informed decision-making so that people can live in a way that reflects their values and aspirations.
Growing Skills, Confidence and Autonomy
Support is continuously reviewed and adapted as people gain confidence, achieve goals or face new challenges. This dynamic approach helps individuals move beyond simply “managing” day-to-day life.
By addressing emotional wellbeing, personal identity and community belonging alongside practical skills, we help people not just to live, but to flourish.
Our Values in Supported Living
Everything we do is guided by clear values that shape how we work with the people we support, their families and our colleagues.
Person-centred care where each individual’s goals, preferences and rights are the starting point.
A supportive, caring culture that recognises the whole person, not just their support needs.
Collaborating with individuals, families and professionals, always with mutual respect.
A quality-driven approach, continually learning and improving the support we provide.
